artificial surfaces get infected with organisms capable of producing biofilm

 

antibiotics alone will relieve symptoms, but infection is still there. When antibiotics are stopped systemic reinfection occurs

biofilm makes it hard for abx to reach organisms

 

some form of operation is necessary: either removal of the artificial material or debridement and washout.
